IT Career advice — This may help you too

In need of some free career advice? I wanted to blog about things that have helped me in my 40+ years of life, 20+ years of IT experience, and working in general.

Summary:

  • Share your knowledge with others.
  • Helping others succeed enables you to succeed.
  • Communication is key. Be a good person. Acknowledge and work on improving your own flaws.
  • Don’t be a dick. No one likes working with or helping the asshole on your team.
  • Be part of the solution; If you recognize something that sucks or could be improved at your job, bring a solution to the problem to your boss. Own fixing it instead of “complaining” about it.
  • Take ownership of your mistakes; you’re human. You’ll gain respect from others by owning your mistakes. That’s how you learn.
  • Have empathy for others; see and acknowledge their perspective
  • You’ll never know everything; acknowledge, embrace, and “fix” that by researching things you don’t know.
  • Continue to learn and improve yourself as a person; this doesn’t mean just related to your job. Don’t know how to crochet? Learn how!
  • Find a work/life balance that works for you. Don’t overwork. Prioritize your mental health.
  • If you’re not being treated fairly or not mentally challenged enough in your current job, it’s time to move on.
  • Have a sense of humor. Use sarcasm where possible. Use meme’s where possible.
  • Apply for jobs you’re interested in (internal or external), even if you don’t meet all of their listed requirements.
  • Don’t have experience in xyz thing? Research and learn more about it.
  • I’ve bombed plenty of interviews. You will too. Don’t let that discourage you from applying to other job listings. You learn and grow your interviewing skills and knowledge that way.
  • Life is short; take your vacation days, even if that means a staycation or having downtime. Spend time with your family and friends.

Conclusion

Hopefully this helps you grow as a person and succeed in your career.
